Kent County, TX (January 5, 2026) – A tragic off-road crash claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy from Tahoka in a rural area of Kent County. The deadly rollover occurred around 12:00 p.m. on County Rd 438, approximately a quarter-mile east of State Hwy 70, according to information from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The ATV involved—a Polaris Ranger Crew—was being driven by a 14-year-old female from New Home when it approached a curve in the roadway. Officials say the vehicle overturned after entering the curve at a speed too fast for the conditions. The 15-year-old passenger, identified by New Home ISD as Truett Mortensen, was ejected and pinned beneath the ATV during the crash.
Emergency responders transported the teen to Fisher County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:43 p.m. The young driver and a 7-year-old boy from New Home, who was also riding in the ATV were not injured. Authorities confirmed that none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Our thoughts are with the family of Truett Mortensen, his classmates, and all those grieving during this incredibly difficult time.
Off-Road Vehicle Accidents in Texas
Recreational vehicles such as ATVs and utility task vehicles (UTVs) are widely used across Texas for both leisure and work purposes. However, these off-road vehicles come with significant risks—especially when operated by younger drivers without protective restraints or on rural roads where terrain conditions vary drastically.
In this heartbreaking incident in Kent County, speed and lack of safety restraints were contributing factors. Rural roadways, like County Rd 438, often lack warning signage, paved shoulders, or barriers, which can make navigating curves and elevation changes particularly hazardous for less experienced operators. Without seatbelts, the likelihood of being ejected or pinned during a rollover increases dramatically.
Sadly, Texas sees a high number of youth-involved ATV crashes each year. While these vehicles can seem manageable, they are not toys—and proper training, supervision, and protective gear are vital. This case also highlights the importance of community-based awareness and education efforts, especially in agricultural and rural areas where ATV use is common among teens.
Grief counselors and support teams can make a meaningful difference in helping students and families cope in the wake of tragedy. In moments like these, the strength of local school districts and communities shines through as they come together to support one another.
