KILLEEN, Bell County, Texas, Oct. 21, 2026 — Five people were hospitalized Monday afternoon, October 19, after a fire broke out at an apartment building on Lake Road in Killeen, authorities said.
The Killeen Fire Department said crews were called to an eight-unit apartment building in the 4400 block of Lake Road around 12:35 p.m. Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke and flames and had reports that people might still be trapped inside, the department said.
Crews searched all eight units and determined everyone had gotten out before firefighters reached their apartments. The department said 15 pieces of apparatus and 37 personnel responded, including five engines, an aerial truck, a rescue truck, four ambulances, two EMS supervisors and two battalion chiefs.
Five residents were taken to the hospital by ambulance. A police officer was treated for smoke inhalation, and a firefighter was treated for knee pain, according to the fire department. Assistant Fire Chief Keith Foxx said two residents jumped from second-story windows and were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
The fire department said the American Red Cross was called in to help displaced residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
We hope everyone who was hurt makes a full and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes apartment and residential fires?
Common causes include cooking equipment left unattended, electrical faults, heating devices placed too close to flammable material, and smoking indoors. Investigators typically review appliances, wiring and witness accounts before determining a cause.
Why do some residents get hurt jumping from windows during a fire?
When smoke and flames block interior exits, people may see a window as the only way out. Jumping from upper floors can cause fractures, sprains or other injuries even when it saves someone from greater harm inside.
What should I do if I'm caught in a building fire?
Get low to avoid smoke, feel doors for heat before opening them, and use stairs, never elevators. Once outside, stay out and let firefighters know if anyone else may still be inside.
