KIMBALL, Brule County, S.D., Oct. 14, 2026 — A man and a young child died on Monday afternoon, October 12, after a wheel separated from a trailer and crossed the Interstate 90 median near Kimball, South Dakota, striking their minivan. Two other passengers in the vehicle were hurt, one critically.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a 31-year-old man from Monticello was driving a Honda Odyssey minivan eastbound on I-90 when a wheel came off a trailer being towed by a Dodge Ram pickup traveling in the opposite direction. The wheel crossed the median and struck the minivan. The driver and a three-year-old passenger died at the scene.

A 24-year-old woman from Monticello who was also riding in the minivan suffered injuries described as life-threatening. An 11-year-old passenger had minor injuries. The driver of the pickup towing the trailer was not hurt.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says the details released so far are preliminary, and the crash remains under investigation. No names have been released.

We are deeply sorry for the losses suffered by the victims' families.

What Makes Road-Debris Crashes on Highways Like I-90 So Deadly

A detached wheel or tire crossing a median behaves differently than a typical collision between two moving vehicles. It strikes with concentrated force at a single point, usually the windshield or front cabin, giving occupants almost no protection even at normal highway speeds. The outcome often depends less on how fast either vehicle was going and more on where the object makes contact.

Median barriers, cable systems, and wider grass or paved separations between opposing lanes are built in part to stop exactly this kind of event. Where medians are narrow or unprotected, loose roadway debris, including tire fragments, trailer parts, and cargo, has a clearer path into oncoming traffic. Interstate departments that have widened medians or added barrier cable on rural four-lane highways report fewer cross-median intrusions of all kinds, not just debris strikes.

Routine commercial and trailer inspections also play a role. Wheel separations are frequently linked to maintenance issues such as improperly torqued lug nuts or worn bearings, which inspection programs are designed to catch before a trailer gets onto the interstate.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic fatalities decreased 4.3 percent from 2022 to 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does seat belt use matter so much in crashes like this?

A properly worn seat belt keeps occupants in position during a sudden impact, reducing the chance of being thrown into the dashboard, windshield, or another passenger. In crashes involving a sudden external strike, belts also help keep occupants from being ejected.

What should families do after a fatal crash?

Families can request a copy of the official crash report once it's finalized, which typically includes findings from the investigating agency. It can also help to ask the agency directly about next steps and what information they can release.

How are fatal crashes investigated?

Agencies like the Highway Patrol typically reconstruct the scene using physical evidence, witness statements, and sometimes vehicle data recorders. For crashes involving commercial trailers or towed equipment, investigators may also examine maintenance and inspection records.

How long do fatal-crash investigations take?

Timelines vary widely. Preliminary findings are often released within days, but a complete investigation, especially one involving mechanical failure, can take weeks or longer before a final report is issued.
