Where Hit-And-Run Pedestrian Crashes Tend to Happen
Roads like FM 78, a wide farm-to-market highway that carries higher speeds through developed stretches, show up often in pedestrian crash reports. These roads typically lack continuous sidewalks or marked crossings for long distances, so people on foot end up walking along the shoulder or crossing where there's no signal or crosswalk nearby.
Unlit stretches compound the problem. Drivers have less time to spot someone walking at night, and pedestrians may not realize how hard it is to be seen in dark clothing against a dark roadway. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 77 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark in 2023.
Hit-and-run cases add another layer. Without a driver who stays at the scene, investigators often rely on surveillance footage, vehicle debris, or witness accounts to piece together what happened, which can slow down both the investigation and any resolution for the family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility is a major factor, and a large share of pedestrian deaths nationally occur after dark, particularly on roads without street lighting.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
If possible, call 911 immediately, stay as still as possible to avoid further injury, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries aren't immediately apparent.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching for each other, especially where there's no signal.
What to Do After a Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash in Kirby, TX
If you witness a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian, call 911 right away and try to note details about the vehicle, including color, make, or any part of the license plate, even a partial one. Stay at the scene if it's safe to do so until first responders arrive.
If you or someone you know has been hit by a vehicle, seek medical care promptly, even for injuries that seem minor at first. Request a copy of the police report once it's available, and keep any documentation related to the incident. Local investigators often ask nearby businesses or residents for surveillance footage, so reporting what you saw, however small, can help identify a driver who left the scene.
