Frequently Asked Questions
What injuries are most common when a vehicle strikes a stopped car?
Occupants can suffer whiplash, head or neck injuries, broken bones, and bruising from being thrown against the interior of the vehicle. Severity usually depends on the speed of the striking vehicle.
What usually causes crashes like this one?
Failing to slow down or move over for a stopped vehicle with emergency lights on is a common factor, along with distracted driving, speeding, and poor visibility.
Why is distracted driving especially risky around lane closures or stopped vehicles?
A driver who looks away for even a couple of seconds may not register flashing lights or slowing traffic in time to react, which is why "move over" laws exist in nearly every state.
Does speed make a difference in how severe a crash is?
Yes. Higher speed means more force at impact and less time for a driver to brake or steer away, which tends to increase the severity of injuries and vehicle damage.
What to Do After a Highway Crash Involving a Stopped Vehicle in Kittitas, WA
If you're involved in a crash with a parked or stopped vehicle on the highway, move to a safe location if possible and turn on your hazard lights. Call 911 and wait for law enforcement to document the scene, even if damage looks minor. Get checked by a medical provider soon after, since injuries like whiplash or internal bruising aren't always obvious right away. Keep a copy of the police report and any medical records in case you need them later for insurance purposes.
