Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Many pedestrian crashes do happen after dark, when drivers have less time to spot someone in the roadway, but collisions like this one also occur in daylight, particularly at intersections where a turning vehicle crosses a crosswalk.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Call 911, stay as still as possible until medical help arrives, and try to get the names of the driver and any witnesses if you're able. See a doctor even if injuries seem minor at first.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians crossing within a marked or unmarked crosswalk generally have the right of way, and drivers turning across a crosswalk are required to yield to them before completing the turn.
How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting a pedestrian?
Checking crosswalks carefully before and during a turn, especially at busy downtown intersections, gives drivers more time to spot pedestrians already in or entering the roadway.
