La Jolla, CA (January 5, 2026) – A 66-year-old male cyclist was injured Wednesday morning after colliding with a vehicle near Genesee Avenue in the La Jolla area, prompting a trauma response and hospital transport for evaluation.
The crash occurred on January 4 when the man, riding along a surface street with his head down, failed to see a vehicle ahead of him and clipped its rear. The impact sent him over the handlebars, causing his face to strike the pavement.
Paramedics from Engine 24 arrived to find the cyclist alert and conscious. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and denied loss of consciousness. However, he sustained multiple facial injuries, including lacerations to the upper lip and nose, and chipped a front tooth. He also complained of neck soreness.
An IV was started on scene, and the cyclist was stabilized with a cervical collar as a precaution. He was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for further care. There were no signs of more serious trauma or internal injury, and the cyclist was not taking any blood-thinning medications.
Damage to the vehicle he struck was described as minor, primarily at the rear cab where the impact occurred.
Officials have not released additional information on the incident, but the crash serves as a reminder of the importance of situational awareness for all roadway users.
We wish the injured cyclist a swift and complete recovery.
