Village of Lake Success, NY (September 7, 2026) – One person died and another was seriously injured early Sunday morning, September 6, after a wrong-way driver collided head-on with another vehicle on the Northern State Parkway. The crash shut down the westbound lanes for hours during Labor Day holiday weekend traffic, according to authorities.

State troopers said a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction struck an oncoming car head-on in the westbound lanes. The driver of the vehicle that was struck was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities reported. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle survived and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to authorities.

Photos from the scene reportedly showed one vehicle spun around and facing the wrong direction on the parkway, with heavy damage to both cars involved. Crews cleared debris and towed both vehicles before the westbound lanes reopened around 10:15 a.m., authorities said.

No charges had been filed as of Sunday afternoon, according to authorities. Neither person’s identity had been released, and the cause of the wrong-way entry remains under investigation.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.

What Makes a Head-On Wrong-Way Crash So Devastating

The severity of a wrong-way crash comes down to closing speed. When two vehicles travel toward each other, the force of impact reflects the combined speed of both cars, not just one, so a head-on collision at highway speeds can hit with far more energy than a typical rear-end or side-impact crash. Vehicle safety cages, crumple zones, and airbags are engineered to manage a single direction of force; they are far less effective when that force comes from two vehicles closing at once.

Ramp design and signage play a quiet but critical role in whether these crashes happen at all, particularly at night. Exit ramps that look similar to entrance ramps, faded or poorly lit wrong-way signs, and confusing interchange layouts can all make it easier for a disoriented or impaired driver to turn onto a highway going the wrong direction. Many of these entries happen during low-visibility hours, when depth perception and reaction time are already reduced.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drivers without valid licenses had a higher risk of fatal wrong-way crashes on divided highways in 2014 through 2023. That finding points to a pattern researchers see again and again: wrong-way crashes are rarely a simple lapse in attention, but often connect to impairment, unfamiliarity with the road, or an inability to correctly read the signage meant to prevent exactly this kind of entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What typically causes a driver to enter a highway going the wrong way?

Common factors include alcohol or drug impairment, unfamiliarity with an interchange, confusion at night or in poor weather, and ramps or signage that make the correct direction of travel unclear.

Why are wrong-way crashes so often fatal?

Because both vehicles are usually traveling toward each other rather than in the same direction, the combined speed at impact multiplies the force involved, often overwhelming the vehicles’ safety systems.

What time of day do wrong-way crashes most often occur?

These crashes concentrate heavily in the overnight and early morning hours, when visibility is lowest and impaired driving is more common.

What can drivers do if they see a wrong-way vehicle approaching?

Slow down, move as far right as safely possible, and if you can do so safely, alert authorities immediately by phone or 911.

If you’re involved in or witness a wrong-way collision, move to safety if possible and call 911 right away. Get contact information for any witnesses, and if law enforcement responds to the scene, ask how to obtain a copy of the official report once it’s completed. Giving yourself time to process the shock of an incident like this is normal, and following up with your own doctor in the days after is a reasonable precaution even if you were cleared at the scene.
