Lane Blockages Can Complicate Traffic Near Busy Intersections
A blocked middle lane can reduce the space available for vehicles approaching an intersection. Traffic may shift into neighboring lanes, creating sudden speed changes and additional merging points for drivers traveling through the corridor.
Intersections can complicate those movements because vehicles may already be turning, changing lanes, or preparing to stop. Limited space between signals and turn lanes can leave less time for motorists to adjust when one travel lane becomes unavailable.
Congestion may also build quickly when traffic volume remains high but roadway capacity drops. Differences in vehicle speed can increase as some drivers slow near the blockage while others merge from adjacent lanes. Clear sight lines and predictable lane movements help reduce conflicts until normal traffic flow can resume.
