Frequently Asked Questions
What factors make a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, time of day, and whether occupants are belted all play a role. Crashes in early morning hours, like this one, usually involve reduced visibility and lower traffic volume, which can lead to higher speeds.
How does speed affect crash survivability?
Higher speeds increase the force of impact and reduce the time a driver has to react or avoid a collision. Even modest speed increases can sharply raise the risk of serious injury or death in a crash.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown against the interior of the vehicle or ejected during a crash, which are common causes of fatal injury in high-speed collisions.
What should families do after a fatal crash?
Families can request the official crash report from the Florida Highway Patrol once it's finalized and can contact the medical examiner's office for information on next steps.
