What Factors Make Car-Motorcycle Crashes at New Mexico Intersections So Serious?
Intersections are among the most dangerous locations for motorcyclists anywhere in the country, and New Mexico is no exception. When a car and a motorcycle meet at a cross-street, the size difference between the two vehicles puts the rider at a severe disadvantage. Even a moderate-speed impact can cause life-threatening harm to someone on a motorcycle, since there is virtually no protective barrier between the rider and the road.
In cities like Las Cruces, busy arterial roads like Valley Drive carry a steady flow of traffic throughout the afternoon hours. Drivers turning or crossing at intersections may misjudge the speed of an approaching motorcycle, particularly when sightlines are limited. The decision to airlift a victim reflects how quickly a serious motorcycle crash can become a medical emergency requiring immediate and specialized care.
