LAS VEGAS, Clark County, NE, Sept. 15, 2026 — A man died Monday night, September 14, after being struck by an SUV while crossing Nellis Boulevard in the east Las Vegas valley, according to authorities. The driver did not stay at the scene, police said.
The crash happened around 8:47 p.m. at the intersection of Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Authorities said a 44-year-old man was crossing Nellis Boulevard outside a marked or implied crosswalk when he was hit by a Genesis GV60 traveling on the roadway.
Police said the impact threw the man onto the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The driver reportedly left without stopping.
A 35-year-old Las Vegas man was later arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on hit-and-run charges, according to police. Authorities said the arrest followed a review of evidence collected at the scene, including surveillance video.
The crash remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Anyone with information has been asked to contact the department's Collision Investigation Section or Crime Stoppers of Nevada.

How Investigators Piece Together a Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash
When a driver leaves the scene, investigators start by reconstruction from what is left of the accident: debris, paint transfer, tire marks and surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras often provide the first leads on a vehicle's make, model and direction of travel. Officers also canvass the area for witnesses who may have seen the moments before or after impact.
Identifying a suspect vehicle is only part of the process. Once a car is located, investigators compare damage patterns, paint chips and any recovered debris against the crash scene before a driver is named or arrested. Officials typically withhold the identity of anyone killed until the medical examiner's office confirms the death and next of kin have been notified, which can take a day or more depending on the circumstances.
Toxicology results, if ordered, and a full reconstruction report can take several weeks to complete. Investigators want lab-confirmed findings rather than preliminary observations before a case moves toward charges or trial, which is part of why official updates on a pending case often arrive slowly.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 1 out of every 4 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes were struck by hit-and-run drivers in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Common factors include drivers failing to yield, pedestrians crossing outside of crosswalks, poor lighting, and distracted or impaired driving. Investigators usually weigh several of these factors together rather than pointing to a single cause.
Does vehicle speed change a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Research consistently shows that survival odds drop sharply as vehicle speed increases at the moment of impact, which is why speed is one of the first things reconstruction teams try to establish.
Where and when do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur at or near intersections and on multi-lane roads with higher speed limits. National data also shows a higher concentration of fatal pedestrian crashes after dark, when visibility is reduced for both drivers and people on foot.
What to Do After a Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash in Las Vegas, NV
If you witness a hit-and-run involving a pedestrian, call 911 immediately and try to note the vehicle's color, make and direction of travel, along with any part of the license plate you can see. Do not attempt to chase the vehicle yourself.
Anyone involved in or affected by a pedestrian crash should seek a medical evaluation as soon as possible, even if injuries seem minor at first. Some injuries, including internal ones, are not immediately obvious.
Filing a police report and keeping copies of any documentation, including photos of the scene and contact information for witnesses, can help support an investigation. Las Vegas residents with information about an unresolved hit-and-run are encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers, even anonymously.
