Where Urban Arterial Crashes Tend to Cluster
Wide city streets with multiple lanes in each direction, frequent cross streets, and heavy midday traffic create a steady stream of opportunities for two vehicles to collide. Intersections along these corridors, especially ones without protected turn signals or with high volumes of cars entering and exiting driveways, tend to produce more crashes than stretches of road with fewer access points.
Midday and early afternoon hours often see a mix of commercial traffic, commuters, and pedestrians moving through these intersections at the same time, which adds complexity for drivers trying to judge gaps in traffic or react to sudden stops ahead. Arterial roads like this one also tend to carry higher speeds than residential streets, which can turn a routine turning or merging maneuver into a more serious collision.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. A large share of those crashes happen at or near intersections, where the number of vehicle paths crossing one another is highest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do right after a car crash?
Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver and wait for police to arrive and document the scene.
How do road and weather conditions factor into crashes like this?
Wet pavement, glare, and heavy traffic volume can all reduce reaction time and stopping distance, even on dry, clear days. Intersections with limited sightlines or heavy cross traffic add extra risk regardless of weather.
Where do most traffic crashes happen?
A large portion of crashes occur at or near intersections, particularly on multi-lane arterial roads where vehicles are turning, merging, or stopping at different speeds.
