LAS VEGAS, Clark County, Nev., Oct. 2, 2026 — A pedestrian was critically injured Thursday night, October 1, after being struck by a vehicle at a southwest Las Vegas intersection, according to police. The crash closed northbound lanes on South Jones Boulevard for hours while officers investigated.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers responded just after 8 p.m. to a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian at South Jones Boulevard and West Rochelle Avenue. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
All northbound lanes of Jones Boulevard at Rochelle Avenue were blocked as officers remained at the scene to investigate. Police asked drivers to use alternate routes while the roadway was closed.
The investigation is ongoing. We hope the injured pedestrian recovers fully.
Why a Vehicle-Pedestrian Crash on a Road Like Jones Boulevard Does So Much Harm
Roads like South Jones Boulevard are built for speed and traffic flow, with multiple lanes, wide turning radii, and long stretches between marked crossings. That design helps cars move efficiently, but it also means a pedestrian crossing anywhere along the corridor, whether at a signal or mid-block, is often exposed to vehicles moving at or near the posted speed limit instead of slowing for a crossing. The gap between a vehicle's mass and a pedestrian's has nothing absorbing the difference. A car's front end is built to crumple and protect the people inside it, not to cushion an impact with someone outside the vehicle.
Closing speed matters more than almost anything else in these crashes. A driver going 25 mph gives a pedestrian a much better chance of survival than one going 40 mph, because the force of the impact rises sharply with speed, not in a straight line. Arterial roads like Jones Boulevard are typically posted well above neighborhood street speeds, which is part of why crashes along those corridors tend to be more severe than ones on slower residential streets.
Sidewalk gaps and long blocks without marked crosswalks push pedestrians into making judgment calls about when and where to cross. On a four or six lane arterial, that often means crossing multiple lanes of moving traffic at once, with no island or refuge in the middle. Safety equipment like automatic emergency braking can help a vehicle react faster than a driver, but it cannot eliminate the physics of a heavy vehicle meeting an unprotected person in the roadway.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. Reduced visibility, combined with higher vehicle speeds in low-traffic hours, makes nighttime crossings riskier, and a large share of pedestrian fatalities nationally occur after dark.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Call 911 immediately, avoid moving unless necessary, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor. Some injuries, especially head and internal injuries, are not obvious right away.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in a marked or unmarked crosswalk, but drivers and pedestrians both carry a responsibility to watch for each other, particularly where visibility is limited or signals are absent.
How can drivers watch for pedestrians more effectively?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning both sides of the road before turning, and avoiding distractions all give drivers more time to spot someone crossing and react.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas in 2023.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Las Vegas, NV
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 right away so police and paramedics can respond. Do not move an injured person unless there is an immediate danger, such as oncoming traffic. If you're a driver involved, stay at the scene and cooperate with officers.
Anyone hurt, even if symptoms seem mild at first, should see a doctor promptly. Adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries in the hours after a crash. It also helps to write down what you remember, including the time, location, and any details about the vehicle or lighting conditions, while they're still fresh. If the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department or another agency releases updates on the investigation, following those official channels is the most reliable way to stay informed.
