LAS VEGAS, Clark County, Nev., Oct. 9, 2026 — A pedestrian died Thursday morning, October 8, after being struck by a pickup truck near the intersection of Alto Avenue and Marion Drive, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Officers were called to the scene just after 5:30 a.m., near Nellis Boulevard and Carey Avenue, police said. Investigators said a 34-year-old man was crossing Marion Drive within an implied crosswalk, walking west on the south side of Alto Avenue, when a 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck turned right onto Marion Drive from a stop sign at eastbound Alto Avenue.
Police said the truck failed to yield to the pedestrian already in the intersection. The front of the pickup reportedly struck him, throwing him onto the roadway and under the vehicle, which then rolled over him before stopping. Medical crews took the man to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver has not shown signs of impairment and has cooperated with investigators, LVMPD said. The case remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced.
We are deeply sorry for the loss suffered by the victim's family.
How Investigators Piece Together a Fatal Pedestrian Crash
Police work at a pedestrian crash scene the same way they would at any fatal collision: measuring skid marks and debris fields, photographing the roadway, and reviewing any available video before vehicles are moved. That early documentation often determines whether later questions, like exact speed or sightlines, can be answered at all.
Names are typically withheld until the coroner's office or medical examiner confirms identification and next of kin have been notified, a process that can take days depending on the circumstances. A full crash reconstruction, including any toxicology testing on a driver, commonly takes several weeks because samples are processed at outside labs and reports have to be cross checked against physical evidence from the scene.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas in 2023. That concentration in cities is part of why departments like LVMPD maintain dedicated traffic investigators who handle these cases from the scene through the final report.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid hitting a pedestrian? Slowing down at intersections, scanning both directions before turning, and never assuming a crosswalk is empty are the basics that prevent most of these crashes, especially in low light.
What injuries typically result from a vehicle hitting a pedestrian? Pedestrians struck by vehicles commonly suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since there is little protecting them from direct impact.
What usually causes these crashes? Failure to yield at turns or crosswalks, driver distraction, and poor visibility during early morning or nighttime hours are among the most frequent factors investigators cite.
Does vehicle speed change a pedestrian's odds of survival? Yes. Pedestrians struck at higher speeds face sharply lower survival rates than those hit at low speed, which is part of why speed near crosswalks and intersections is closely scrutinized in these investigations.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Las Vegas, NV
If you're involved in or witnessing a pedestrian crash, you should call 911 immediately and avoid moving an injured person unless there's an immediate danger. Even pedestrians who feel uninjured after being struck should be checked by medical personnel, since some injuries, especially internal ones, aren't obvious right away.
Witnesses should stay at the scene long enough to speak with responding officers, and anyone with phone video or photos should preserve them in case they're useful to the investigation. Families of someone hurt or killed in a pedestrian crash can request the police report once it's finalized, which typically takes some time as the investigation closes out.
