Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a vehicle roll over in a crash?
A rollover usually happens when a vehicle's momentum shifts sideways faster than its tires can hold, usually during a sharp turn, a sudden swerve, or an impact that pushes it off balance. Taller vehicles with a higher center of gravity are more prone to tipping.
Do rollovers happen more on certain types of roads?
They're more common on highways and beltways where speeds are higher, since a loss of control at speed gives a vehicle more force to tip over than it would at lower speeds on local streets.
What injuries typically result from a rollover crash?
Rollover crashes can cause a wide range of injuries, from cuts and bruises to broken bones, head injuries, and spinal injuries, particularly when an occupant is thrown against the roof or window during the roll.
What should I do if I'm involved in a rollover crash?
Stay as still as possible if you suspect a back or neck injury, call 911, and wait for first responders if you or anyone else is trapped rather than trying to force a door or window open.
