Troopers said the SUV driver, a 45-year-old Pensacola man, did not see the cyclist because of low light before the front of the SUV hit him. The driver was not injured.
Emergency medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the site. His name was not released in the initial report.
The wreck remains under review as investigators continue gathering details. We extend our sincere condolences to the man’s family and loved ones.
Why Late-Night Bicycle Accidents Can Be Deadly
Late-night bicycle accidents can be especially dangerous because visibility is often reduced. Drivers may have less time to see a rider, especially on roads with limited lighting or few protected bike spaces. A bicycle’s smaller size can also make it harder to notice from behind.
Riders have little protection when they are hit by an SUV or another larger vehicle. Medical teams may check for head, chest, spine, and limb trauma after severe contact. Investigators may review lighting, lane position, roadway markings, vehicle speed, bicycle equipment, and witness statements. These details can help explain how the vehicle and bicycle came together and why the outcome was fatal.
