When Intersection Crashes Tend to Happen
Crashes at rural and small-town intersections often cluster around the times when traffic patterns shift quickly, like the late morning and early afternoon hours when commuters, delivery drivers and school-related trips overlap on the same roads. Midday light is usually good, but drivers moving between errands can be distracted or moving faster than the intersection allows for.
Two-road crossings without heavy signal control, like many found in small Delaware towns, rely heavily on drivers correctly judging gaps in traffic and yielding right of way. A momentary lapse, whether from a phone, a conversation, or simply not seeing a stop sign in time, can turn into a collision at these spots.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 6,138,359 police-reported traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Many of these happen at intersections, where the paths of two vehicles cross directly, a setup that tends to produce harder side and angle impacts than a simple rear-end collision.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does speed affect the severity of an intersection crash?
Higher speed means less time to react and more force at the moment of impact. Even a modest increase in speed can turn a minor fender-bender into a crash that causes serious injury.
Why is distracted driving especially risky at intersections?
Intersections demand constant attention, checking cross traffic, signals, and turning vehicles. A few seconds looking at a phone or dashboard is often enough to miss a stop sign or a car entering the intersection.
What should I do immediately after a car accident?
Move to a safe spot if possible, check for injuries, and call 911. Exchange information with the other driver, take photos of the scene, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries aren't immediately obvious.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Laurel, DE
If you're involved in a crash in Laurel, stay at the scene and call emergency services right away so medics and police can respond. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since some injuries like whiplash or internal bruising don't show symptoms right away.
Remember to take photos of the vehicles, the road, and any visible damage if you're able to safely do so, and get the contact and insurance information of anyone else involved. Once Delaware State Police have filed a report, you can typically request a copy for your records or insurance claim.
