Laurel, DE (August 17, 2026) – A 41-year-old Laurel man died on Saturday night, August 15, after being struck by a car while walking in the travel lane of Sussex Highway near Oasis Drive, according to Delaware State Police. A Toyota Camry traveling south in the right lane struck him around 9:20 p.m.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died; his name is being withheld pending family notification. The Toyota’s driver, a 21-year-old Laurel man, was not hurt.

Sussex Highway was closed for about three hours while troopers processed the scene. The DSP Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.

Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Might a Pedestrian Be Walking Directly in a Travel Lane at Night?

There are several possible reasons someone might end up walking in a road’s travel lane rather than a shoulder or sidewalk, and investigators generally weigh multiple explanations rather than settling on one early. Limited shoulder space, poor lighting, or an obstruction along the roadside can all factor into where a pedestrian ends up walking.

Visibility is especially limited after dark, and a driver’s ability to spot someone ahead depends heavily on headlights and any ambient lighting nearby. A pedestrian walking in the same direction as traffic, as happened here, can be even harder to notice, since a driver has less time to register a shape moving away from them compared to one crossing their path.

Investigators typically examine lighting conditions, vehicle speed, and reaction time to understand how much time a driver realistically had to see and respond to a pedestrian in the road; this kind of review helps establish the full circumstances surrounding a crash like this one.

2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
