LEBEC, Kern County, Calif., Nov. 1, 2026 — A three-vehicle crash blocked lanes on northbound Interstate 5 near the East Escape Ramp north of Grapevine on Thursday afternoon, October 29, according to the California Highway Patrol. An ambulance was requested, though the extent of any injuries has not been confirmed.
The crash was reported just north of the east escape ramp on NB I-5, in the far lanes of the freeway, the CHP traffic log shows. Kern County Fire Department crews arrived to find the wreck already blocking traffic and requested a tow for one of the vehicles. The log listed the injuries as unknown in extent at the time crews arrived on scene.
A hazard was reported in the number one lane as the response continued, and later radio traffic noted a tow truck working to clear one vehicle from the number four lane while three vehicles remained at the scene. A commercial tow service was also requested to assist, according to dispatch notes. The CHP has not confirmed whether anyone was hurt.
The cause of the crash has not been determined. The CHP has not said whether speed, weather or any other factor played a role, and no further details were available as of Thursday afternoon.
We are hoping for the best for everyone involved and their families.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Move as far onto the shoulder as possible, turn on hazard lights, and stay inside the vehicle with a seatbelt on unless it's unsafe to remain there. Watch for emergency crews and tow trucks entering or exiting travel lanes.
How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?
Reduced visibility shortens the distance drivers have to react to slowed or stopped traffic ahead, which can turn a single crash into a multi-vehicle pileup as following vehicles arrive too fast to stop.
Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck?
Yes. Stopped or slow traffic near a crash scene creates a hazard for approaching drivers, which is why responders typically route traffic around the scene quickly and ask drivers to slow down and move over.
