LEONARDTOWN, St. Mary's County, Md., Nov. 7, 2026 — One person was flown to a trauma center on Wednesday afternoon, November 4, after a two-vehicle crash near MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown left a driver trapped inside a vehicle.
The collision happened around 12:05 p.m. along Point Lookout Road (Route 5), near the hospital entrance, according to fire and rescue radio traffic. Initial reports described a T-bone crash between two vehicles, with one occupant possibly pinned inside. A 911 caller reported a deployed airbag and said a child was in one of the vehicles. Another occupant was reportedly having chest pain. An automated OnStar alert was also triggered by the crash, though responders said they could not reach anyone inside that vehicle by phone.
Multiple fire and rescue units responded, including Rescue Squad 1, Rescue Squad 7, Ladder Truck 1A and several ambulances. Crews confirmed two vehicles involved and one driver trapped. Rescue Squad 1 personnel removed a door to free that driver. Two patients were taken to a hospital for treatment, and a Maryland State Police helicopter was called in for one of them. Trooper 7, with Maryland State Police Aviation Command, landed at the MedStar St. Mary's Hospital helipad and flew that patient to an area trauma center.
Fire and rescue crews remained on scene for about an hour. The cause of the crash has not been released.
We hope those who were hurt recover fully and quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do weather and road conditions affect crash risk?
Wet pavement, poor visibility and road debris can all reduce a driver's ability to react in time, making collisions more likely at intersections and turns.
What should someone do right after a car accident?
Check for injuries, call 911, move to a safe spot if possible, and wait for emergency responders to assess the scene before moving a trapped or injured occupant.
Where do most traffic crashes happen?
A large share occur at or near intersections, where turning vehicles and crossing traffic create the chance for T-bone and other angle collisions.
