Why Side-Impact Crashes Often Lead to Serious Injuries
Side-impact crashes, sometimes called T-bone accidents, occur when the side of one vehicle is struck by the front or rear of another. These collisions often happen at intersections where vehicles cross paths while turning or proceeding through traffic signals.
The sides of most vehicles have less structural protection than the front or rear. Because of this, the force of the crash can reach occupants more directly, especially when there is intrusion into the passenger compartment.
Airbags and reinforced door frames help reduce harm, but serious injuries can still occur when the impact is strong. Loss of consciousness may happen if a person’s head strikes a part of the vehicle during the crash.
Extrication may be required when doors or frames are damaged, and occupants cannot exit safely. Rescue crews then stabilize the person before removing them from the vehicle.
