When Single-Vehicle Crashes Tend to Happen
Crashes involving one car losing control and striking a fixed object cluster heavily in the overnight and early morning hours. Traffic volume is low at those times, which can tempt drivers to speed, and road edges, shoulders, and bridge abutments are harder to see once headlights are the only light source available.
Fatigue plays a bigger role late at night and in the early morning than at almost any other time of day. A driver's reaction window narrows when they are tired, and a lane drift that would be a minor correction in daylight can become a loss of control before the driver even registers what is happening. Rural roads add another layer: fewer streetlights, sharper unmarked curves, and narrower shoulders near bridges and culverts.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 2,442,581 people were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. Many of those crashes, like overnight single-vehicle collisions, happen when visibility and alertness are both at their lowest point of the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do right after a car accident?
Check for injuries, move to a safe location if possible, and call 911. Exchange information with anyone involved and wait for law enforcement to document the scene before leaving.
Where do most car accidents happen?
A large share occur on local and rural roads rather than highways, often at intersections, curves, or fixed objects like guardrails and bridge supports, especially when visibility is reduced.
How can drivers reduce their risk on the road?
Staying well rested before driving, slowing down on unfamiliar or poorly lit roads, and keeping both hands on the wheel through curves and bridge approaches all help drivers stay in control.
What injuries are common in car accidents?
Common injuries include broken bones, head and neck injuries, and internal injuries, with severity often tied to speed and whether seat belts were worn.
