Frequently Asked Questions
What causes a vehicle to roll over?
Rollovers usually happen when a vehicle trips on a curb, soft shoulder or another object while sliding sideways, or when a sharp steering move at speed causes it to tip. Taller, narrower vehicles are more prone to tipping than low, wide ones.
Why are rollover crashes dangerous?
A vehicle that rolls can strike its roof and sides multiple times, and unbelted occupants are frequently thrown around the cabin or ejected, which raises the chance of serious injury.
Which vehicles are most prone to rolling over?
SUVs, pickup trucks and vans sit higher off the ground and have a higher center of gravity than sedans, making them more likely to tip in a sharp turn or after striking an object.
Does wearing a seat belt matter in a rollover?
Yes. A seat belt keeps an occupant positioned inside the vehicle during a roll, which lowers the risk of being thrown against the roof or ejected entirely.
