Why Medical Helicopters Are Sometimes Used After Highway Crashes
Medical helicopters are often requested after serious highway accidents when rapid transport to a trauma center may improve treatment times for critically injured patients. Air transport can be especially useful when crashes occur in congested traffic areas or when injuries require specialized medical care.
Investigators reviewing major highway crashes typically examine vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and traffic flow leading up to the collision. Skid marks, debris patterns, and lane positions may help explain how the crash occurred.
Temporary highway closures are common during helicopter landings because emergency crews need a secure area free of moving traffic. These closures also allow responders to safely treat victims, remove damaged vehicles, and document evidence from the scene.
