Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes multi-vehicle crashes like this one?
Chain-reaction crashes involving three or more vehicles often stem from sudden slowing or stopping on a highway, following too closely, or a driver reacting late to traffic ahead. Investigators typically look at speed, following distance and driver attention when sorting out how each vehicle became involved.
Does speed make a difference even on a highway with normal traffic flow?
Yes. Higher speeds reduce the time a driver has to react and increase how hard vehicles collide, which raises the chance of serious injury even in crashes that start as minor fender-benders.
How much does distracted driving play into highway pileups?
A glance at a phone or another distraction for even a few seconds can mean missing brake lights or a slowing vehicle ahead, which is often enough to trigger a chain-reaction crash on a fast-moving highway.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Livonia, MN
If you're involved in a crash with multiple vehicles, stay as calm as possible and check yourself and any passengers for injuries before stepping out, since traffic may still be moving nearby. Call 911 and, if your vehicle is drivable and it's safe to do so, move it to the shoulder to avoid blocking lanes. Even if you feel fine, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider afterward, since injuries from a collision don't always show symptoms right away. Make sure to exchange information with the other drivers involved and get the names of any responding officers or agencies, and request a copy of the official crash report once it's available for your own records.
