Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In California, pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks once they have stepped into the roadway, but drivers and pedestrians both carry a duty to watch for each other, especially at night or in low-light conditions.
How can drivers reduce the risk of hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down near intersections, scanning both sides of the road before proceeding, and avoiding distractions like phones give drivers more time to spot and react to someone crossing, particularly after dark.
What injuries are most common in pedestrian accidents?
People struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal trauma, since they have little protection compared to someone inside a car.
What are common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Poor visibility at night, speeding, failure to yield at crosswalks, and distracted driving are frequently cited factors in crashes involving pedestrians.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Lompoc, CA
If you're involved in or witness a pedestrian crash in Lompoc, you should call 911 immediately so paramedics can evaluate the injured person, even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Staying at the scene and speaking honestly with responding officers helps ensure an accurate report.
