Frequently Asked Questions
Why are crashes involving several vehicles harder to sort out than a two-car collision?
Investigators have to determine the order in which vehicles struck each other, which often means interviewing multiple drivers and witnesses, reviewing damage patterns on each vehicle, and sometimes pulling data recorders before a sequence of events can be confirmed.
What typically triggers a pile-up with multiple vehicles and trailers?
These crashes often start with one vehicle slowing, stopping, or losing control, then other drivers following too closely or reacting late get pulled into the chain. Spilled cargo, like the trailers involved here, can add to the hazard for vehicles arriving afterward.
Is there a way for drivers to avoid getting caught in a chain-reaction crash?
Leaving extra following distance, watching brake lights several cars ahead, and slowing early when traffic bunches up near a highway segment can give a driver more time to stop before a chain reaction reaches them.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Londonderry Township, PA
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, stay inside your car if traffic is still moving nearby, and turn on hazard lights to warn others. Call 911 even for what seems like minor damage, since injuries from multi-vehicle crashes aren't always obvious right away. Get checked by a medical professional even if you feel fine at the scene, adrenaline can mask pain from a collision for hours. Exchange information with other drivers only once it's safe to do so, and take photos of all vehicles involved if you're able. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it becomes available.
