How Vehicle Crashes Can Lead to Building Impacts
Traffic crashes sometimes cause vehicles to leave the roadway and strike nearby structures. When two vehicles collide, the impact force can push one vehicle off its original path.
Intersections and busy urban streets may increase the chance of this type of event. Vehicles may be traveling in different directions, and a sudden impact can redirect a car toward sidewalks, parking areas, or buildings.
Structures close to roadways, such as shops, offices, and community facilities, may be especially vulnerable when a vehicle loses control after a crash. Safety barriers, curbs, and building setbacks can help reduce the risk of a vehicle reaching a structure, but they do not always prevent an impact when a collision occurs.
