Frequently Asked Questions
What is "dooring" and why is it dangerous?
Dooring happens when a driver or passenger opens a car door into the path of an oncoming cyclist, often without checking first. It can force a cyclist to swerve into traffic or crash directly into the door, and it causes injuries because the cyclist usually has no time to react.
How can cyclists stay safer in traffic?
Riding predictably, using lights and reflective gear after dark, and keeping distance from parked cars all help. Making eye contact with drivers at intersections, like the one in this crash, can also reduce the chance of being missed.
Do cyclists have the same road rights as drivers?
In Massachusetts, as in most states, cyclists generally have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers on public roads, including the right to use travel lanes and the duty to obey traffic signals.
What to Do After a Bicycle Crash in Lowell, MA
Anyone involved in a bicycle crash should seek medical attention right away, even if injuries aren't immediately obvious. Head injuries in particular can seem mild at first and worsen over the following hours. It's also worth asking for a copy of the police report once it's filed and noting details of the scene, including weather, lighting, and any traffic signals, while they're still fresh. Checking in on recovery with a doctor in the days after a crash, not just at the scene, can catch issues that don't show up right away.
