Why Do Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Lead to Full Highway Closures?
Multi-vehicle crashes can quickly escalate into major traffic disruptions, especially on busy highways like I-94. When several vehicles are involved, debris, damaged vehicles, and emergency response activity can block multiple lanes or even the entire roadway.
In addition, responders need space to safely assist victims, investigate the crash, and remove vehicles. This often requires shutting down traffic completely, at least temporarily.
Heavy traffic, high speeds, and sudden slowdowns are common contributing factors in these types of crashes. Drivers can reduce risk by maintaining safe following distances, staying alert, and adjusting speed based on road conditions.
