MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Macomb County, Mich., Sept. 30, 2026 — Two men died Tuesday night, September 29, in a head-on crash on 23 Mile Rd in Macomb Township, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened around 11:18 p.m. near the intersection of 23 Mile Rd and Lancelot Dr, between Romeo Plank Rd and Card Rd, deputies said. A black pickup truck driven by a 60-year-old man from Harrison Township was reportedly headed west on 23 Mile without its headlights on when it crossed into the eastbound lanes, the sheriff's office said. The truck then collided head-on with a van driven by a 30-year-old Macomb Township man, investigators said.

The van's driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck's driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died, the sheriff's office reported.

The sheriff's office said the investigation into the crash is ongoing and that no further details have been released.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased victims.

A Common Misconception About Head-On Crashes

Many drivers assume head-on crashes are mostly a rural highway problem, the result of someone passing on a two-lane road at high speed. That does happen, but it is not the only or even the main picture. Head-on collisions also occur on ordinary suburban roads, often at night, when a vehicle drifts out of its lane for reasons that have nothing to do with passing, including a missed turn, a medical event, fatigue, or impairment.

The bigger misconception is about survivability. Because both vehicles are moving toward each other, the combined speed at impact is far higher than in a rear-end or side-impact crash, even when neither driver was going fast by normal standards. That is part of why these crashes produce so many deaths relative to how often they happen.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2,979 passenger-car occupants were killed in two-vehicle crashes involving a passenger car and a light truck in 2023. That figure reflects how mismatched vehicle sizes and weights, not just speed, shape the outcome when two vehicles meet head-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are common in head-on crashes?

Occupants often suffer chest, head, and leg injuries from the force of impact and from striking the steering wheel, dashboard, or windshield. Injuries tend to be more severe than in other crash types because of the combined closing speed of both vehicles.

What typically causes a head-on collision?

Common factors include a vehicle drifting out of its lane, impaired or drowsy driving, driving without headlights at night, and attempts to pass in a no-passing zone. A single moment of lost control or attention can send a vehicle into oncoming traffic.

Why do head-on crashes tend to be so severe?

Because both vehicles are traveling toward each other, the total force of the impact is much greater than in most other collision types, even at moderate speeds.

How can drivers reduce the chance of a head-on crash?

Staying alert, keeping headlights on at night, avoiding distraction, and never passing in marked no-passing zones all help keep a vehicle in its own lane.
