How Pedestrian Highway Crossings Can Lead to Fatal Outcomes
Pedestrian crashes on high-speed roadways like Loop 375 often result in severe or fatal injuries due to limited visibility and fast-moving traffic. Drivers may have only seconds to react when someone is on the roadway, especially during nighttime hours when lighting is reduced.
Highway environments are not designed for foot traffic, which increases the danger when pedestrians enter active lanes. Investigators typically review roadway design, lighting conditions, driver speed, and pedestrian movement patterns to understand how these incidents occur. Even when drivers attempt to brake, the distance required to stop at highway speeds can make it difficult to avoid a collision once a pedestrian is in the travel lane.
