Jackson Township, NJ (June 1, 2026) – A man was found dead along S Hope Chapel Rd in Jackson Township early Monday, May 31, after a dump truck ran over his body, according to investigators.
The incident was reported at about 2:30 a.m. on Monday, June 1. Emergency units arrived and found a man in the roadway with severe head trauma. He was pronounced dead at the site.
Investigators said a Mack dump truck was traveling north on S Hope Chapel Rd when the driver noticed what appeared to be debris ahead. The driver attempted to avoid it but later realized it was a body in the road. Officials said the truck ran over the man despite the driver’s efforts to steer clear.
The driver stopped immediately and notified law enforcement. A post-crash inspection found no signs that the front of the truck had directly struck the pedestrian. Evidence gathered during the investigation indicated the vehicle ran over a body that was already lying in the roadway and dragged it a short distance.
The identity of the deceased man had not been released as of this report. Detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the fatal wreck. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the man’s family and friends during this difficult time.
What Factors Are Often Examined When a Pedestrian Is Found in a Roadway?
When a person is discovered in a travel lane, investigators typically work to determine how and why that person came to be there before any vehicle passed through the area. This process may include reviewing roadway evidence, vehicle inspections, surveillance footage, and witness statements when available.
Medical findings can also help establish the sequence of events and whether injuries occurred before or after contact with a vehicle. Lighting conditions, visibility, traffic patterns, and road design are often reviewed as well. In cases involving commercial vehicles, inspection records and driver observations may provide additional context.
Early reports frequently contain only basic facts, while more detailed findings emerge as evidence is analyzed. As information is collected and evaluated, investigators can develop a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding a fatal roadway death.
