Lawrence County, MO (June 28, 2026) – A 25-year-old man suffered serious injuries in a wrong-way crash early on Sunday morning, June 28, on Interstate 44 about one mile west of Halltown in Lawrence County.

According to the investigation, a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia was traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes when it collided with a westbound 2022 Lexus ES. The Lexus was driven by a 25-year-old man from Belleville, Michigan, while the Freightliner was operated by a 69-year-old man from Sun City, Arizona.

The Lexus driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital in Joplin for treatment. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene. No additional injuries were reported.

Our thoughts are with the injured driver as he continues to recover.

Why Wrong-Way Crashes Tend to Result in Severe Injuries

Wrong-way crashes frequently involve head-on impacts, which are among the most severe types of traffic collisions. Because vehicles are traveling toward one another, the combined force of impact can cause significant vehicle damage and serious injuries, even when occupants are wearing seat belts.

Investigators typically review roadway evidence, vehicle damage, witness accounts, and any available traffic camera footage to determine how a driver entered the wrong side of the roadway. They may also examine roadway signs, lighting conditions, and other environmental factors. These findings help establish the sequence of events and provide a clearer understanding of how the collision occurred.
