When Motorcycle Crashes Turn Deadly on Rural Highways
Fatal motorcycle collisions on highways like US 67 tend to cluster around certain conditions rather than certain hours alone. Long, straight rural stretches invite higher speeds, and a vehicle merging, turning, or closing distance can leave little time for either driver to react. Afternoon and early evening hours usually see more of these crashes simply because that is when motorcycle traffic and commuter traffic overlap on two-lane roads.
Glare, wind gusts, and sudden shifts in visibility also play a bigger role on open highway than they do in town. A motorcyclist has no frame around them to absorb an impact, so a crash that a pickup truck occupant might walk away from can be fatal for the rider.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 37,654 fatal traffic crashes occurred in 2023. Motorcyclists make up a small share of vehicles on the road but continue to account for a large portion of those deaths, largely because of how exposed riders are in any collision with a larger vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do fatal crashes happen most commonly?
Rural highways and undivided two-lane roads see a higher share of fatal crashes than city streets, usually because of higher speeds and longer emergency response times.
What makes a crash more likely to be fatal?
Speed, vehicle size mismatch, lack of protective structure (as with motorcycles), and delayed emergency response all raise the odds that a crash proves deadly.
How much does speed affect survival?
Even modest increases in speed sharply raise the force of impact, which is why crashes on higher-speed roads tend to produce more severe injuries.
Why does seat belt use matter so much?
Seat belts keep occupants from being thrown from a vehicle or against its interior, which is one of the biggest factors in surviving a serious crash. Motorcyclists have no equivalent restraint, which is why helmets and protective gear matter just as much for riders.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Marfa, TX
If you witness or are involved in a motorcycle crash, call 911 immediately and avoid moving an injured rider unless there is an immediate danger like fire or oncoming traffic. Stay on the scene until deputies or troopers arrive and can document what happened.
Anyone involved, even if they feel fine, should seek a medical evaluation soon after. Adrenaline can mask injuries like internal bleeding or fractures for hours. Keep a copy of any police report filed and follow up with the investigating agency, in this case the Texas Department of Public Safety, for updates once the review is complete.
