MAY TWP, Cass County, Minn., Oct. 14, 2026 — A Cushing, Minnesota man was hurt on Tuesday morning, October 13, when his SUV crossed the center line on Highway 210 and collided with a semi-truck near the Highway 64 junction. The Minnesota State Patrol said the crash happened in May Township in Cass County.

A 2023 Chevy Equinox was heading eastbound on Highway 210 when it reportedly drifted into the westbound lanes and struck a 2016 International tractor-trailer. The road was dry at the time, the agency said.

The driver of the Equinox, identified by the state patrol as 66-year-old Charles Gregory Madden of Cushing, Minnesota, suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. He was taken to CentraCare in St. Cloud, Minnesota, for treatment.

The truck's driver, identified as 66-year-old Terence Sellers of Gatineau, Quebec, was not reported injured. The Cass County Sheriff's Office and Motley Fire and Rescue responded to the scene along with state troopers.

The state patrol said its information on the crash is believed complete, though the cause of the lane departure has not been detailed. The crash remains under review.

We wish those injured a full recovery.

A Common Misconception About Head-On Crashes

Many drivers assume head-on crashes mostly happen on long, remote stretches of highway where speeds are high, and traffic is sparse. The truth is that a single moment of inattention or a momentary loss of control at any speed can send a vehicle across the centerline, no remote setting required. Crossing into oncoming traffic is usually sudden and can happen on roads drivers travel every day.

Another assumption is that these crashes are rare. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 2,442,581 people were injured in traffic crashes in 2023, a figure that includes a wide range of crash types across every kind of road, not just isolated rural highways.

The data suggests that the conditions people associate with head-on crashes, like bad weather or obviously reckless driving, are not always present. A dry road and ordinary traffic, as in many such crashes, can still set the stage for a vehicle to cross into opposing lanes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do weather and road conditions affect the odds of a crash like this?

Dry pavement lowers the chance of skidding, but lane departures can still happen due to distraction, fatigue, or a medical event, regardless of conditions.

What should someone do right after a head-on collision?

Call 911, stay in a safe location if possible, and avoid moving a seriously injured person unless there is an immediate danger like fire. Seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first.

Where do most traffic crashes tend to occur?

Crashes are common both on rural highways with higher speeds and on local roads with heavy intersections; no single road type accounts for all serious collisions.

What can drivers do to stay safer on two-lane highways?

Staying alert, avoiding distractions, and watching for signs of fatigue or oncoming traffic drifting can help drivers react sooner if another vehicle crosses the centerline.
