The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation. No additional information was available as of Monday morning.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased.
How Is Darkness Related to Pedestrian Deaths?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 77 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in the dark in 2023. That figure reflects a basic problem: drivers have less time to see and react to someone crossing or walking along a road once the sun goes down, and pedestrians are harder to spot against dark pavement and low light.
Early morning hours carry some of the same risk factors as late night. Traffic volume is lower, but drivers may be fatigued, and lighting along many roads is limited to whatever streetlights are in place. Crosswalks and intersections that feel safe in daylight can look very different at 1 or 2 a.m.
National crash data consistently shows that pedestrian deaths cluster in these darker hours rather than spreading evenly across the day. That pattern holds across cities of different sizes and road types, which is part of why lighting and visibility come up so in reviews of pedestrian crashes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Common factors include limited visibility, driver inattention, speeding, and pedestrians or drivers failing to yield at crossings. Weather and road design can also play a role.
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Slower speeds give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of impact if a crash does happen, which generally improves a pedestrian's odds of surviving or avoiding severe injury.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur outside of marked crosswalks, on arterial roads, and in areas with limited street lighting, though they can happen anywhere vehicles and foot traffic mix.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. National data shows a large share of pedestrian deaths happen after dark, when visibility is reduced for both drivers and people on foot.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Crash in Memphis, TN
If you witness or are involved in a pedestrian crash, call 911 right away so officers and paramedics can respond. Do not move an injured person unless there is an immediate danger, such as ongoing traffic.
Stay at the scene until police arrive and give them your account of what you saw. If you are able, note details like lighting conditions, weather, and the approximate time, since these can matter later in an investigation.
Anyone involved, even if they feel unhurt, should still be checked by a medical professional. Some injuries, particularly head and internal injuries, are not obvious right after a crash. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it becomes available.
