What Helps Keep Riders Visible to Other Drivers
A motorcycle presents a narrow profile on the road, and that narrowness is part of what makes it easy to miss. A driver scanning an intersection or a lane of traffic is trained, often without realizing it, to look for the width and shape of a car or truck. A motorcycle can slip into the gap between those visual cues, especially where it overlaps with a blind spot or gets lost against a cluttered background of signs, trees, or other vehicles.
Road design has done a lot to close that gap. Better street lighting at intersections, roundabouts that slow traffic and simplify the decisions drivers have to make, and signal timing that gives motorcycles their own clearance interval all cut down on the moments where a rider can be overlooked. Median barriers and wider shoulders also reduce the chance that a misjudged gap turns into a collision.
Driver habits matter just as much as the pavement underneath them. A second glance before a turn, a mirror check before a lane change, and simply expecting a motorcycle to be there all reduce the odds that one goes unseen. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,335 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2023.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does road surface condition affect motorcycle safety?
Yes. Potholes, gravel, wet pavement, and uneven lane markings affect motorcycles more than cars because a rider has less contact with the road and less margin to correct for a skid or sudden bump.
What gear actually reduces injury in a motorcycle crash?
A DOT-approved helmet, abrasion-resistant jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots are commonly cited by safety researchers as reducing the severity of head, road-rash, and limb injuries in a crash.
What usually causes motorcycle accidents?
Common factors include a driver failing to see the motorcycle before turning or changing lanes, speeding, impaired driving, and riders being struck at intersections where visibility is limited.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes?
Riders have no frame, airbags, or seatbelts around them, so a collision transfers force directly to the rider, making fractures, head injuries, and road-rash wounds more likely even at moderate speeds.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Memphis area, TN
If you are involved in a motorcycle crash, you should get a medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries.

Photos of the scene, both vehicles, and any visible injuries can be useful later, and it's worth following up with the treating hospital for complete medical records. For anyone shaken by what they witnessed or experienced, local hospitals and the Shelby County area have counseling resources available through victim services programs.
