Why Pedestrian Crashes Turn Severe After Dark
A pedestrian crash often comes down to one number: closing speed. A person on foot has no frame, no crumple zone, and no airbag. Whatever energy a vehicle carries at the moment of impact has to go somewhere, and it goes into the body of the person it strikes. A car moving at even a moderate speed can throw a pedestrian to the ground or into a windshield, and the heavier the vehicle, the more energy transfers on contact.
Darkness compounds the problem before impact ever happens. Headlights illuminate the road ahead, but a driver's ability to spot a person walking along or across it drops once the sun goes down, especially outside a lit intersection. Someone in dark clothing can be nearly invisible until a car is already too close to stop. Reaction time that would be enough in daylight often isn't enough at night.
Vehicle safety features like automatic braking and pedestrian detection sensors are designed to help close that gap, but they rely on cameras and sensors that also struggle in low light. None of that technology can fully substitute for a driver who sees a person in time to stop.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
A large share occur at intersections or mid-block crossings, particularly on multi-lane roads where vehicles travel at higher speeds and crosswalks may be spaced far apart.
Are pedestrian crashes more common at night?
Yes. National data consistently show a higher share of pedestrian deaths occur after dark, when visibility is reduced for both drivers and people on foot.
What should a pedestrian do after being hit by a car?
Call 911 immediately if possible, avoid moving unless necessary, and seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor, since some injuries aren't immediately obvious.
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
In most states, including Tennessee, pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks, though drivers and pedestrians both share a duty to watch for one another.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2023.
