MENLO PARK, San Mateo County, Calif., Oct. 17, 2026 — A multi-vehicle crash blocked lanes on eastbound State Route 84 near University Avenue on Friday night, October 16, and left at least one person with injuries.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash was first reported shortly after 10 p.m. as a four-vehicle collision on eastbound Route 84 just west of University Avenue. All lanes except the left lane were blocked in the initial minutes after the crash, and officers later said traffic was still getting past the scene on the right shoulder.
The agency's incident log describes an unknown sedan and a small SUV involved early on, with a red Honda CR-V also reported with major rear-end damage. The CHP upgraded the call from an unknown-injury collision to a minor-injury collision, and San Mateo County fire units requested two tow rollbacks after assessing vehicle positions at the scene.
Menlo Park police also responded and at one point asked for an additional flatbed tow for one of the vehicles. Multiple towing companies were contacted before trucks were confirmed en route, and dispatch records show crews worked to clear the roadway for roughly an hour.
The CHP has not released names, ages, or a count of how many people were hurt. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do chain-reaction crashes happen?
They typically start when one vehicle slows or stops suddenly, and the vehicles behind it can't react in time, especially at night or in heavy traffic where following distances are already short.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a pile-up?
Leaving extra space ahead, scanning several cars down the road, and slowing early when brake lights appear can give a driver more time to stop safely.
What should I do if I'm stopped near a crash on the highway?
Stay in your vehicle with hazard lights on if it's safe to do so, watch for approaching traffic, and move only as directed by officers managing the scene.
How does fog or low visibility contribute to pile-ups?
Reduced visibility shortens the time drivers have to see trouble ahead, which is why multi-vehicle crashes usually cluster at night or in poor weather on fast-moving highways.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Menlo Park, CA
If you're involved in a multi-vehicle crash, check yourself and any passengers for injuries before stepping out, and move to a safe spot away from moving traffic if you're able. Call 911 and wait for officers to document the scene, since collisions involving several vehicles can take time to sort out responsibility. Even if you feel fine, a medical check in the following day or two is worth it, as some injuries from sudden stops or impacts don't show symptoms right away. Keep copies of any police report and photos of the scene for your own records.
