Crash data and road safety trends in Saginaw reflect the city’s unique layout and history. Saginaw stretches across both sides of the Saginaw River and is home to about 43,000 people, though its roots go back to the days when Saginaw City and East Saginaw were rival river towns before merging in 1890.

Today, traffic flows across a handful of bridges, like M-46 on Rust Avenue and I-675 on the Henry G. Marsh Bridge, connecting neighborhoods on either bank. On the east side, I-75 carries cars between Flint and Bay City, and I-675 forms a loop around the north end of downtown. Washington Avenue brings M-13 through downtown toward Bay City, while Bay Road heads north, passing by Fashion Square Mall and Saginaw Valley State University, both just outside the city limits.

In 2025, the city saw fewer traffic deaths, but crashes and serious injuries continued to be an issue for local drivers. Michigan centralizes most crash reports on a single website, but it is still important to know which agency responded, as that determines where your report can be found.

After an Accident in Saginaw: Reports and Agencies

The Saginaw Police Department handles crashes on city streets. The Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office, at 311 South Harrison Street, patrols the rest of the county’s 810 square miles alongside township police departments, and Michigan State Police troopers from the Tri-City Post in Freeland, which covers Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties, work crashes on I-75 and I-675 around Saginaw.

Michigan’s Traffic Crash Purchasing System, run by the State Police, sells crash reports filed by every law enforcement agency in the state, including city police. A report costs $15. You need a free MiLogin account, a credit card, and either the driver’s license number or the case number, plus a date of birth and the crash date. Reports can take 3 to 30 days to appear; without those details, file a FOIA request with the agency.

Michigan law, MCL 257.622, requires a driver to report a crash to the police immediately when someone is hurt or killed or the apparent damage reaches $1,000.
