GRANT TOWNSHIP, Saginaw County, Mich., Oct. 7, 2026 — A woman died Monday evening, October 5, after a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Wildcat Rd and Burtch Rd, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office. Deputies were called to the scene just before 5 p.m.
Investigators said a white Dodge Journey was headed south on Wildcat Rd when it entered the intersection and struck a black Jeep Liberty traveling west on Burtch Rd. The Journey then collided with a gray Chevrolet Impala headed north, the sheriff's office reported.
The 41 year old woman driving the Journey died of her injuries, deputies said. Two people were taken to a hospital by TriHospital EMS, and two others suffered minor injuries, according to the report. Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor at this time, investigators said.
The sheriff's office Accident Investigation Team is continuing to look into the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
What Actually Cuts Down Multi-Vehicle Intersection Crashes
Crashes where several vehicles arrive at an intersection at nearly the same moment often come down to timing and visibility. Engineers who study these intersections point to fixes that work before a crash ever happens: roundabouts that slow approach speeds and remove the risk of a high-speed broadside hit, better signal timing that gives crossing traffic a clear gap, improved lighting at rural crossings, and turn lanes or medians that separate conflicting paths of travel.
When a crash does happen at a busy rural intersection like this one, the danger does not end with the initial impact. Vehicles stopped or disabled in the roadway, along with the responders, tow operators and investigators who arrive afterward, are exposed to passing traffic that may not see the scene in time to stop. These secondary crashes are a real risk at any multi-vehicle wreck, which is part of why deputies work quickly to redirect traffic and mark off the area.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, 8,617 people were killed in intersection-related crashes in the federal analysis summarized in 2023. That toll reflects both the moment of collision and the chain of events that can follow it, including the secondary crashes that happen when a scene isn't cleared or protected quickly enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes multi-vehicle pile-ups at intersections?
These crashes usually start when one vehicle enters an intersection against the right of way or fails to stop in time, pulling other vehicles already in or approaching the intersection into the collision.
How can drivers avoid getting caught in a chain-reaction crash?
Leaving extra space behind the vehicle ahead, slowing down at intersections even with a green light, and watching cross traffic can help a driver react before a crash becomes a pile-up.
What should I do if I come across a crash scene on the road?
Slow down well before the scene, turn on hazard lights, and move over if possible. Avoid stopping in a traffic lane unless it's unsafe to continue, and watch for responders and debris in the roadway.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Grant Township, MI
If you're involved in or witness a crash like this, call 911 right away and stay in a safe location away from traffic. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical professional, since some injuries from a collision don't show symptoms immediately.
It's important that you cooperate with deputies at the scene and get a copy of the incident report once it's available, as it can be useful for insurance and medical follow-up. Reach out to loved ones and give yourself time to process the experience; a crash like this can be disorienting even when physical injuries are limited.
