LAS VEGAS, Clark County, Nev., Oct. 7, 2026 — One person died and seven others were displaced after an apartment fire late Monday night, October 5, on E Tropicana Ave, in southeast Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Fire Department. The blaze broke out in a two-story multifamily building near East Tropicana Avenue and Eastern Avenue.

Dispatchers reportedly received calls about the fire around 11:51 p.m. Monday. Crews arriving at the scene found smoke and flames coming from a first-floor apartment, the fire department said.

Firefighters located a victim inside the unit while working to put out the flames. The person was pulled from the apartment and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. No other injuries, including among firefighters, were reported.

The fire stayed contained to the apartment where it started, but smoke forced seven residents from the building. Property management, family members and the American Red Cross are assisting those displaced. The fire department said 45 personnel responded, including seven engines, two trucks, two rescue units, two battalion chiefs, two investigators and an EMS captain. Las Vegas police helped direct traffic and NV Energy worked to secure power to the building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

How Investigators Determine What Caused a Fatal Apartment Fire

Fire investigators typically begin at the scene once the flames are out and the structure is safe to enter. They examine burn patterns, electrical systems and any items that might have sparked the blaze, working outward from the area where the fire appears to have started. This process can take hours at the scene and days or weeks afterward as evidence is tested and reviewed.

Names of people who die in a fire are usually withheld until the coroner's office confirms identity and notifies next of kin. That step protects grieving families from learning of a death through news reports, and it can take several days depending on the condition of remains and how quickly relatives are located.

A final cause determination often waits on lab results, including analysis of debris for accelerants or faulty wiring, and on interviews with residents or witnesses. Fire departments and allied agencies generally decline to speculate on a cause until that work is complete, which is why early statements describe only what crews found when they arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should someone do immediately after an apartment fire?

Get to a safe distance, call 911 if it hasn't been done already, and avoid re-entering the building even to retrieve belongings. Let fire crews confirm the structure is safe before going back inside.

What are common injuries in apartment or structure fires?

Smoke inhalation is the most frequent injury, along with burns and injuries sustained while escaping, such as falls or cuts. Even residents who weren't near the flames can need medical evaluation for smoke exposure.

How do weather or building conditions affect fire severity?

Older wiring, blocked exits, and a lack of working smoke detectors can all make a fire spread faster or make escape harder. Dry conditions and strong winds can also help flames spread between units in multifamily buildings.
