Frequently Asked Questions
Who has the right of way at a crosswalk?
Pedestrians generally have the right of way in marked and unmarked crosswalks once they've begun crossing, but drivers and walkers both share responsibility for watching traffic and crossing signals before stepping into or through an intersection.
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone on foot?
Slowing down in areas with limited lighting, scanning the roadway edges, and avoiding any distraction behind the wheel all give a driver more time to spot and react to a person in or near the road.
What injuries are common in pedestrian crashes?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles usually suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and internal injuries, since they have no protection from the impact the way someone inside a car does.
What typically causes these crashes?
Impaired or distracted driving, low visibility at night, and pedestrians walking in roadways without sidewalks are common factors investigators look at in these cases.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Midland, TX
Anyone involved in or who witnesses a pedestrian crash should call 911 right away so police and medical crews can respond. If you're the pedestrian and able to do so, seek medical evaluation even if injuries seem minor at first, since some internal or head injuries aren't immediately obvious. Try to note details while they're fresh, such as the direction of traffic, lighting conditions, and any other witnesses nearby. Cooperating with the responding officers and requesting a copy of the official crash report can help later on, whether for insurance purposes or simply understanding what happened. Follow up with your own doctor in the days after, even after an ER visit, to make sure any lingering symptoms are addressed.
