Fairfield, CA (July 20, 2026) — At least four vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction pileup on Saturday morning, July 18, on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Air Base Parkway off-ramp in Fairfield. Investigators said a brown Subaru lost control after its hood came open, striking two additional vehicles before coming to rest in a ditch.

Several other vehicles ended up off the roadway as well, including one that overturned onto its side in a ditch and another that went into a fence, according to dispatch records. Bystanders were reported helping people out of their vehicles before emergency units arrived.

Fire crews arrived at the scene, and additional vehicles required towing after the pileup, according to dispatch logs. Injuries were initially reported as possible before being confirmed as minor. The exact cause of the collision remained under review as of Saturday afternoon.

We’re glad to hear the injuries were minor, and we wish everyone involved a smooth recovery.

Why a Hood Popping Open While Driving Is So Dangerous?

Most vehicles have two separate latches holding the hood shut: a primary latch and a smaller secondary safety catch. If the primary latch isn’t fully engaged, wind resistance at highway speeds can force the hood open, even if the secondary catch briefly holds it in place. This is more likely after recent hood access, such as an oil change, if the latch wasn’t fully reset.

When a hood suddenly flies up, the driver’s view of the road disappears in an instant. Many drivers react by braking hard or swerving without being able to see ahead, which can send a vehicle into another lane or off the road. On a busy highway, that sudden movement can catch nearby drivers off guard before they have time to react.

Routine checks can help prevent this. After any service work involving the hood, drivers are encouraged to firmly close it and give it a light push to confirm both latches are engaged. A hood that pops open even slightly while parked, or feels loose when pushed down, should be checked by a mechanic before the next drive.
