What Can Cause Crashes on Rural Roads?
Rural roads can present driving challenges because they may have higher speeds, limited lighting, and fewer traffic-control features. Drivers may also encounter trees, fences, narrow shoulders, and other roadside hazards close to travel lanes.
Maintaining a safe speed gives drivers more time to react when another vehicle enters their path. Staying alert near intersections and avoiding distractions can also help motorists recognize changing traffic conditions.
Weather and visibility can further affect roadway safety. Using headlights when visibility is reduced, maintaining adequate following distance, and adjusting speed to conditions can help drivers respond more effectively to unexpected hazards.
