When Two-Vehicle Crashes Cluster Through the Week
Afternoon intersection crashes like this one tend to spike during the stretch between the end of the school day and the start of the evening commute, when traffic volume climbs fast, and left-turn and cross-traffic movements multiply at signaled intersections. Drivers juggling fatigue from a long week, sun glare at certain angles, and more pedestrians and cyclists on the road all add risk during these hours.
Weekday rush periods are not the only flashpoint. Saturday and Sunday afternoons carry their own surge, as more drivers head out for errands, sports, and social trips, usually on roads they travel less frequently than their daily commute route.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 17,008 motor-vehicle crash deaths occurred outside passenger vehicles in crashes involving passenger vehicles in 2023. That figure is a reminder that intersection and roadway crashes carry consequences well beyond the people inside the cars themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do most traffic accidents happen?
A large share of crashes occur at intersections, where turning movements and cross traffic create more opportunities for drivers to misjudge gaps or run through signals.
How can drivers reduce their crash risk?
Slowing down for intersections, scanning cross streets before proceeding, and avoiding distractions like phones cut down on the split-second misjudgments that cause most collisions.
What injuries are most common in car accidents?
Whiplash, bruising from seatbelts or airbags, and cuts from broken glass are typical in lower-speed crashes, while higher-speed impacts can cause broken bones or head injuries.
What are the most common causes of car accidents?
Distracted driving, speeding, following too closely, and failure to yield at intersections rank among the leading causes nationwide.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Modesto, CA
If you're involved in a crash in Modesto, move to a safe spot if possible and check yourself and others for injuries before doing anything else. Call 911 so officers can document the scene and arrange medical help if needed, even if injuries seem minor at first.
Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver, and take photos of the vehicles, the intersection, and any visible damage. Seeking a medical check soon after the crash is worthwhile, since some injuries, like whiplash or concussions, don't show symptoms right away. Keep a copy of the police report for your records once it becomes available.
