MONROE, Snohomish County, Wash., Oct. 28, 2026 — Three people were hurt Tuesday afternoon, October 27, in a four-vehicle crash on westbound US 2 near milepost 12 in Monroe, according to the Washington State Patrol. One vehicle involved was a flatbed semi, troopers said.
The crash began when a vehicle traveling westbound behind another car attempted to pass in the eastbound lane, according to the state patrol. That vehicle struck the car it was passing and then collided with a flatbed semi that was heading eastbound, investigators said. The semi reportedly rotated into the westbound lane and struck a fourth vehicle that had been following behind the first car.
When the vehicles came to rest, one was off the eastbound side of the road, another sat on the eastbound shoulder, the semi was off the westbound side, and the fourth vehicle ended up facing the wrong direction in the westbound lane, the report said.
The drivers of the passing vehicle and the fourth vehicle were taken to Providence Hospital with injuries, troopers said. The driver of the car that was struck while being passed was transported to Evergreen Hospital. The semi's driver was not injured, according to the report. Three of the four vehicles were considered total losses; the semi and its trailer were able to be driven away from the scene.
The Washington State Patrol said the crash remains under investigation.
We wish those injured a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What typically causes a pile-up involving several vehicles?
Chain-reaction crashes often start with one vehicle making an unsafe move, such as passing in an oncoming lane or following too closely, that leaves following drivers no time to react.
Why do these crashes tend to involve so many vehicles?
Once a crash blocks a lane or sends a vehicle spinning into traffic, nearby cars often have only seconds to brake or swerve, which can pull additional vehicles into the collision.
What should a driver do if they come upon a crash scene on the highway?
Slow down well before reaching the scene, turn on hazard lights, and watch for debris or vehicles in unexpected positions. Avoid stopping in a travel lane if it can be helped, and follow any instructions from responding officers.
What to Do After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Monroe, WA
If you're involved in a crash with several other vehicles, try to stay where you are unless your car is at risk of being hit again, and turn on hazard lights if they still work. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries before stepping out, since adrenaline can mask pain from a collision. Call 911 even if injuries seem minor, and let responding officers document the scene before vehicles are moved, if it's safe to leave them in place. Seek a medical evaluation within a day or two even if you feel fine, since some injuries from a crash don't show symptoms right away. Keep records of any treatment and follow up with your doctor if new symptoms appear in the days after.
