Why Pedestrians Face Higher Risks When Standing in Roadways
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when they are in active traffic lanes. Drivers often expect movement along the road, and a person standing still can be harder to detect, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced.
Lighting conditions also affect reaction time. At dawn, changing light levels can make it difficult for drivers to see objects ahead clearly. This can delay braking or evasive action.
Vehicle size and stopping distance are additional factors. Even at moderate speeds, cars require time and space to come to a complete stop. When a pedestrian is in the roadway, especially without warning, the chance of a serious or fatal outcome increases significantly.
